About the Course

Ready to take your music directing to the next level?

​

Whether you’re preparing to music direct your first show, have already MDed a few productions, or simply want to strengthen your skills before stepping onto the podium, this practical workshop is designed for musicians who want to grow in the role of Music Director.

​

Music directing a musical is about much more than knowing the score. An effective MD needs to lead musicians and performers, communicate clearly, and teach and coach singers with confidence.

This workshop will explore two key areas of music directing:

Conducting Basics with Ruth Kwan
Let’s go back to the fundamentals of conducting. This portion will be a hands-on practical session on marking your score, beat patterns, dynamics, cues, cutoffs, and more. We’ll focus on the practical skills you actually need in the rehearsal room and in the pit to ensure you’re communicating your musical intentions clearly and effectively.

Teaching & Coaching Vocals with Stacey Ingrey
Not a singer? No problem. This session bridges the gap between conducting technique and vocal pedagogy, providing you with actionable insights to foster a healthier, more expressive, and more confident ensemble.

About the Instructors

Ruth Kwan is back in Ottawa after a number of years on the road with the North American tours of The Phantom of the Opera (Associate Music Director), Miss Saigon (Keyboard 1/Assistant Conductor) and Mean Girls (Keyboard 1/Assistant Conductor). She played as local keyboard for the North American tours of A Chorus Line, Mamma Mia! Beautiful: The Carole King Musical and Mean Girls. She can be seen on occasion playing keyboard instruments with the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Ruth is a proud graduate in piano performance from Le Conservatoire de musique de Gatineau, New York University and Manhattan School of Music.

Stacey Ingrey has been teaching voice from her Kanata studio for over twenty years. She has performed extensively in classical, pop, and musical theatre. Former and current students have gone on to perform internationally in film, musical theatre, pop and country, and classical singing. She is a registered voice and theory teacher with the Ontario Registered Music Teacher's Association (ORMTA), the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers' Association (CFMTA) and the Musical Theatre Educators' Alliance (MTEA). Stacey is an Advanced Voice Specialist and Theory Specialist, and has her Associate Diploma (ARCT) with the Royal Conservatory of Music. Stacey currently teaches voice for the Musical Theatre Diploma program at Saint Lawrence College, Brockville Campus. Stacey believes all singers can learn to sing in a healthy way without compromising their story.
